After getting really bored one Saturday, some friends and I decided to set out on a quest to soak up the sun. We set out for the East side of Oahu. After driving through a neighborhood of ridiculously nice and redoubtably expensive homes we arrived to a pretty fat gate. Unfazed by this feeble attempt at dissuading us from partaking in a dope adventure, we hoped right over that junk and took off. The entire trail is paved and leads to some sort of camp as well as mass of cellular antennae and satellites. We also came across the remains of what seemed to be an old military outpost near the summit, but who knows what mysteries this ridge holds. One thing I have learned about Hawaii, is that the best hikes are the illegal ones. Although I love all sorts of hikes, I have to admit that a “no trespassing” sign makes that particular hike suddenly gains 10 points in my book.
Pretty amazing pay off for such an easy hike. Our buddies got into a short altercation after an argument over who would win in fight between Chalula sauce and Sriracha (a.k.a the cock sauce).
But then they remembered that they were friends… The way down was very chill and the view continued to gain in grandeur as the sun was setting. We were welcomed back to the base of the mountain by a palette of colors only a Hawaiian sunset could produce The Dead Man’s Cat Walk is an amazing hike. Very easy, great sweeping views of the windward coast of Oahu as well as the Koko Head on the return trip. Despite my light hearted mention of the hike’s legality, annoyed residents can report hikers to the police and DLNR. The consequences can be real. I have never seen any cops at this particular hike and would like for it to stay that way. Therefore, please be respectful of the residents and the property along the trail. Rules are only created and enforced because of people who abuse certain situations. Be safe, Sunshine.
